“Porphyria’s Lover” was first published as “Porphyria” in the Monthly Repository. Browning was writing
this poem around the same time that psychiatry was making its way onto the
playing field of common thought. Modern scholars such as Ekbert Faas believe
that this fact could contribute to the rise in well-read authors such as
Browning and Tennyson portraying mental issues in their works, particularly
their dramatic monologues.
