“Porphyria’s Lover” was first published as “Porphyria” in the Monthly Repository. Browning was writing this poem around the same time that psychiatry was making its way onto the playing field of common thought. Modern scholars such as Ekbert Faas believe that this fact could contribute to the rise in well-read authors such as Browning and Tennyson portraying mental issues in their works, particularly their dramatic monologues.
